Bill and Ann Cranney continue serving in Ghana. This is what Ann wrote on 6 Feb 2010.

I bought some beans to make a soup mixture to put over baked potatoes for lunch on Saturday. We had invited the family history couple and Pres. Smith to come to our after the District training to eat lunch with us. I washed and really picked over the beans, especially getting all the weevil out of the beans. I noticed that there were a small holes in every bean. The weevil had been busy. I felt confident that I had found all the little critters. I soaked them and boiled the beans for a couple of hours. As I looked close I saw a black spot in most of the beans by the small hole. When I broke them open, you guessed it, it was a weevil. I wanted to throw them out. Bill wouldn't let me. He said that is just part of the bean thing. It wouldn't hurt us, because they were cooked good. I made the soup, and it did taste good, but knowing that weevil were in them made me uncomfortable. We had our lunch and everyone enjoyed the beans. I had a hard time choking them down. Oh the things you can get used to when you have to. Our missionaries loved them and scraped the pan when we had them over for lunch earlier (when I made my first batch, before I knew that they had bugs in them). No one has died from eating weevil, that I know of.

This poignant note from Bill Cranney is dated February 7th.

Yesterday evening the landlord came to check out our fence. His hired man finished reinstalling the razor wire. He worked all day on it. When I came out to give him some pure water we talked about his family. Seems that he was working for a security company, even took trips to China for training. It was a good job. Somehow, he didn't say, when the company found out he was infected with the HIV virus, they fired him. He has been working for himself ever since. He has a wife, who is also infected, and two children. One child is nine and the other thirteen. He told me that the children did not have the virus and that yes, he is talking medication to slow the progress of the disease. I asked him about the church and he would like to have missionaries visit his family. A very nice, well dressed man. So many in this part of the world are infected with this deadly virus. No cure. It breaks your heart.
